PBT(Polybuthylene
terephthalate) is a crystalline
resin that offers some of the
best heat resistance, chemical
resistance and electrical properties
of all engineering plastics. Crystallization
is rapid, so cycle times are short,
while weather resistance, friction
resistance, wear resistance, dimensional
stability and heat aging resistance
are all outstanding. PBT is known
for its great physical property
balance and economical benefits.
Importantly, properties are greatly
enhanced when glass fiber or mineral
filler are added to PBT, and making
it flame retardant is very easy.
PBT is widely used in TV parts
and such electrical parts as connectors,
relays and switches. In addition,
water absorption is low, and PBT
is a highly reliable material
for precision parts and automotive
parts even after extended periods
of use.

| Characteristics |
PBT is a crystalline
resin, so cycle time is very short and
productivity is high. It is used in
many products that are reinforced with
glass fiber or other mineral filler.
When reinforced with 30% glass fiber,
the heat distortion temperature improves
from 70oC to 210oC,
and mechanical properties are enhanced
about three times, making it well suited
for use in functional parts. In addition,
PBT offers far superior mechanical properties
than other engineering plastics do,
while water absorption is very low.
During injection molding, however, there
is a possibility of water decomposition
compromising physical properties. Therefore,
water content must be kept no higher
than 0.02% prior to the injection molding
process.
