Overview

PVC(Poly Vinyl Chloride) was synthesized first in 1835 by a French chemist V. Regnault and was made commercially available in the United States (1933), Germany (1935), and Japan (1941), thanks to UCC succeeding in the development of the Mass Polymerization method. Initially, PVC was mainly used for making wire insulation, raincoats, and soles.

During the 1960's, U.S. chemical companies such as Dow, Goodrich, and others in Japan produced VCM (Vinyl Chloride Monomer) by Oxy Chlorination method, boosting PVC manufacturing. VCM monomer is composed of carbon, hydrogen and chlorine and turns into PVC when it is polymerized. PVC is one of the most commonly manufactured Plastics that we use in every day life since it is permanent and easy to process by various methods. As synthetic leather, pipe, wrapping material, and wall paper, PVC is highly essential to our life.

PVC is manufactured in three different methods: Suspension, Emulsion, and Mass Polymerization. Approximately 80% of PVC, worldwide, is produced by Suspension, 10% by Emulsion, and the remaining 10% by Mass Polymerization.
Characteristic
  • Polarity Structure (excellent properties)
  • Water proof: indissolvable, impermeable to water.
  • Acid/Alkali proof.
  • Decomposed material (HCl) is very hazardous and corrosive.
  • Whemically inactive and hard to process.
  • Sensitive to light and heat.
  • Fragile
